Parliament Matters

Year Six have taken part in UK Parliament week 2018. We discussed how the UK parliamentary system works and how motions are passed through the House of Commons. We then created our own political campaigns and thought of slogans to help get our messages across in a memorable way. As a class we then voted which bill we though should be passed.

Remembrance Sunday 2018

Our School Council led us to the 11am Remembrance Service at Hoyland’s Cenotaph. Father Richard led the service to commemorate the contribution of British and Commonwealth military and civilian servicemen and women involved in the two World Wars and later conflicts. This year, with Remembrance Sunday falling on the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War, we saw a vast number of people viewing the ceremony. The school’s wreath was laid and looked beautiful alongside similar offerings from our #WonderfulCommunity. A pleasure for West Meadows to attend such a moving and special occasion. Thank you to Ms. Steele & Mrs. Walton for their fabulous support.

Memorable Homework

This Year 5 superstar has produced some wonderful work at home. Based upon the 100 year end to WW1, she has been inspired by the efforts of the Royal British Legion and our #WonderfulCommunity in raising money and awareness for this wonderful cause. Some sensational work, really well done.

Super Volunteers

We love these pictures of the new South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue recruits reading with our wonderful children. As part of their training course, the new recruits have been working with our community safety team to take the time to get to know the communities they hope to soon be serving. Eleven trainee firefighters visited us – they ae the 62nd class of new recruits. It was a pleasure hosting them at West Meadows. Thank you for inspiring us all.

Remembrance 2018

Many thanks to our lovely friend Father Ricard for joining us for Remembrance 2018. He reminded us of the ending to World War 1, discussed important anniversaries, why we should remember and also the importance of the Poppy Appeal – supported beautifully again in school. We held a minute’s silence and listened to the Last Post. A moving and emotional time, thank you Father Richard. We hope to see many of our #WonderfulCommunity at the Hoyland Cenotaph on Sunday.

Crucial Crew 2018

We visited Crucial Crew to find out about how to keep safe in all aspects of life. We learned about road safety, arson, crime and punishment, as well as some basic first aid. We had a great fun and learned how to keep up safe as we think about moving to secondary school. We weren’t quite so sure about the new Bus Drivers however! A brilliant day, well done Year 6.

We Will Remember Them

From Monday 22nd October, we will be supporting the 2018 Poppy Appeal. The Poppy Appeal is the Royal British Legion’s biggest fundraising campaign held every year in November, the period of Remembrance. This year, join us as we mark the end of the WW1 centenary by saying Thank You to all who served, sacrificed and changed our world. We have a range of gifts available as well as our usual Poppies. We thank you for your support – the Royal British Legion has proved to be an extremely popular charity amongst our #WonderfulCommunity

Holiday Times

Many thanks as always to Father Richard who shared his thoughts on a range of subjects in Assembly.  We learned about Saints, their Halo and the importance of holidays and rest to all of us. Thank you for your support throughout the year Father Richard, we are so lucky to have you as a huge part of our #WonderfulCommunity

Captains Table 2018

West Meadows are so proud of all the children who earned a prestigious place at the Captain’s Table for 100% attendance for the school year. They were waited on by staff at lunchtime and received gifts for their amasing achievement. Thank you to Mrs. Maree & Mrs. Beever for arranging this wonderful celebration. An astonishing 37 children achieved this amazing accolade – almost double last year’s 19! Great work.

Eden Camp 2018

Year 6, accompanied by some Year 5s, had a wonderful day at Eden Camp, North Yorkshire. A former Prisoner of War Camp, the Museum is dedicated largely to World War II – a recent topic. Some of the Evacuee Outfits were simply amazing as our children as well as several excited adults were evacuated to the North! Exhibitions such as Women At War, The Home Front, The Blitz & The U-Boat Menace ensured we reviewed our learning but also learnt an enormous amount of new information. Thank you to all of the supporting adults, well done to Mrs. Brown for organising the trip and especially well done to all 38 children who had a special day away from School. The Gift Shop Manager was certainly pleased to see all of them! A day to remember!
