Around the World!

Year 5 have been very creative this week and have been designing different parts of the world. They have worked excellently in their teams and the finished products look amazing! Enjoy our wonderful efforts right here, they’re certainly worth preserving…

Year 5 Visit St. Peter’s Church

Year 5 have explored the church! We asked lots of questions and found out all about Anglican churches. It was a very interesting morning hosted by Father Paul. Thank you to Father Richard for arranging our tour, a wonderful afternoon.

Storyteller visit in Y5

We had a special visitor this week who came to tell us all about traveller heritage and tell some very entertaining stories. Richard told us that we should all follow our dreams (just like he did) and we could become anything we wanted to be. We loved hearing his stories and watching his woodwork demonstrations.

Roald Dahl Day 2017

We have been celebrating Roald Dahl’s birthday with some very exciting activities this year. We focused on the story ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.’ To begin with, we played a few games! First, we had to match up some of Mr Willy Wonka’s sweets with their descriptions. Then, we all took part in ‘THE THESAURUS RACE!’ We were all given an adjective and we had to find as many synonyms as possible in the quickest time. During the day we created some beautiful pieces of artwork but our favourite part of the day was definitely…THE TASTING ROOM! We were given lots of different sweets to taste and we had to describe the taste. We created our own Gobblefunk language (just like Roald Dahl) by combining two of the adjectives we found in the Thesaurus Race. It was a DAHLicious day!

Headteacher’s Superstar Award

Our first Headteacher’s Superstars of the new year come from Year 1 and Year 5. In Key Stage 1, this young man has impressed Mrs. Fitzsimmons greatly with his hard work and excellent behaviour! In Year 5, this superstar is a superb role model to his peers and has shown Miss Knox that he is ready for the challenges of Upper Key Stage 2. A superb start to the school year. Well done gentlemen!

Olympic Day in Year 5

Year 5 enjoyed closing their topic with an exciting Olympic Day. All of the children were grouped in to their own city states and each state created something for the opening ceremony: a national anthem; a traditional Greek dance; bronze, silver and gold medals; a theatrical performance and a presentation all about the Olympic Games. In the afternoon, each city state competed in our very own Olympics – well done to Sparta!

Rounders 2017

We attended our final competition of the year; Rounders hosted by Birdwell.  The children were simply amazing from ball one, winning all three group fixtures comfortably to ease through to a final showdown against the hosts Birdwell.  A fantastic batting display saw us set a target of 7 points.  The children followed up the batting with an even better display in the field with run out after run out, restricting Birdwell to just the three points! What a way to finish the school year, also meaning we have won the Rounders competition three out of the last four years! Well done to all involved – and a special thank you to the wonderful Mr. Smith!

Kirk Balk Cup 2017

On Thursday afternoon, we took part in the first annual Kirk Balk Cup. We took a Year 4/5 Team to play against both Year 6 teams from other schools in the Locality and Year 7 teams from Kirk Balk. Our children had a fantastic afternoon and more than held their own against older children! Super proud as always, you are a real credit to the school and yourselves! Huge thanks to Mr. Smith for his leadership PE and Sport.

Euphonium Star 2017

Some amazing progress in Year 5 by our resident Music Man. Here he is sharing ‘Jeanie with the Light Brown Hair,’ a song by Stephen Foster. Foster wrote the song with his wife Jane McDowell in mind. Enjoy his wonderful playing here, the variety of high notes and low ones is impressive to say the least. Well done Music Man.

Lifepath 2017

Year 5 enjoyed a fantastic trip to the Emmanuel Church in Barnsley this week to learn all about the life of James Hudson Taylor. He was the Barnsley man who took the Christian faith over to China. While we were there, we completed lots of activities. Some were about the Chinese culture and some were about Christianity. It was wonderful! A fantastic day!
