Year 5 Assembly November 2017

Year 5 provided our #WonderfulCommunity with a fantastic display of their term’s learning. The children have been working on a Survival Theme and included several subjects within this work to share. Persuasive Writing, DT Skills, Media Work, Maths, Art and Music were all included in a tremendous show case. Of course, the speaking and listening on show was terrific! Thank you to all who were able to attend the event – well done to all members of the Year 5 team!

Champion

Here is the 2017 IDTA North West Champion in Ballroom and Latin! This win qualifies her for the National Championship to be held in Blackpool in April 2018. An absolutely fabulous achievement and one that makes us all incredibly proud. Well done – we hope Mum has ordered a larger mantel piece!

The Mountain Rescue Team

What an amazing morning! Members of the Mountain Rescue Team (including Mr. Knox – yes her Dad!) visited and let us all explore their Land Rover Ambulance. The siren was really loud! We all went into the hall and practised how to rescue any casualties. We had to work together in our teams to carry a patient around. We also tried to keep warm using a huge tent! Later in the morning, we were given the opportunity to try some of the equipment after playing the game, ‘guess what’s in the rucksack.’ Thank you, Woodhead Mountain Rescue Team. What a fantastic group of volunteers you are.

National Stars of Dance

We are delighted – and extremely proud – to display our two National Dancing Stars. After qualifying for the National Championships via the North West regional event, they attended the contest at Norbreck Castle in Blackpool. From Year 5, our dancing star competed against children up to two years her senior and achieved a wonderful 6th place in the national standings! This was in Classical and Modern Sequence. A fabulous achievement. From Year 2, competing in the same disciplines at her younger age group, our superstar became International Dance Teachers Association National Champion! We are delighted to share these outstanding achievements and could not be any prouder. What an amazing weekend for the girls and their lovely family.

Happy Halloween!

What a fantastic day we all had on Thursday! Together with Y4 and some Y6 children, we took part in some spooky Halloween activities. We started off the day with a game of hide and seek. All of the ghosts and ghouls had to search for the children that were hiding around the school. One clever Y4 boy managed to escape from all of the spooky characters searching for him! Our next activity was the Haunted Catwalk. We took it in turns to creep our way towards the judges – the scariest moves won a prize! A famous spooky dance completed this activity which we all really enjoyed. Following this, Year 5 took part in some maths activities and later in the day we dished out the popcorn and settled down to a spooky film. To end our Halloween day, we attended an amazing disco that our wonderful PTA had arranged for us.

YEAR 5 SURVIVAL DAY!

Last Friday, Year 5 all took part in a SURVIVAL DAY at Hesley Wood. One of our activities was climbing. We had to use all our strength to climb the wall and retrieve a food item. We then had to discuss why we may or may not use this food item in a survival situation. The next activity was shelter building. We had to use some tarpaulin and rope to create the safest den that would stop the rain from getting in. After that, we went onto raft building. We had to safely get a chicken, some corn and a fox from one side of the lake to the other and back again ( but we had to use our problem solving skills to make sure that the chicken didn’t eat the corn…and the fox didn’t eat the chicken!) The final activity was fire building. We collected lots of wood and once the fire was roaring, we cooked some bread. It was a fantastic day and in the end WE ALL SURVIVED!

Netball Champions

Our Years 5 and 6 Netball team attended the Annual Locality competition at Hoyland Common. The children were simply outstanding from start to finish, winning all three group matches convincingly, with some outstanding individual and teamwork, to finish top of the group and ease into the final. Just as you thought it couldn’t get any better, the children put on a display that any adult Netball team would have been proud of, blowing the opposition away, scoring three points in the opening minutes, ensuring a rather comfortable finish. As always the children were fantastic and were a real credit to themselves and school! Well done! Thanks to Mr. Smith for leading our team, they were just amazing.

Enterprise Challenge 2017

Years 5 and 6 enjoyed a fabulous Enterprise Day with Larger than Life. The children worked together in mixed groups to design a new musical area which would appeal to their ‘perfect customer’ again designed by the teams. The groups had to budget their ideas and include a selection of musical attractions within their play area. Everyone had a wonderful time samba drumming as well as experimenting with a range of percussive sounds. The groups then had to sell their ideas to a Dragons Den; thank you to Miss Beever, Mrs. Fitzsimmons & Miss Knox for judging. Two groups were selected as a Barnsley finalist and a St. Mary’s Academy Trust finalist. Well done to everyone who was involved and thank you to St. Mary’s Academy Trust and to Larger than Life for providing such a wonderful entrepreneurial and fun day at West Meadows!
