YEAR 5 SURVIVAL DAY!

Last Friday, Year 5 all took part in a SURVIVAL DAY at Hesley Wood. One of our activities was climbing. We had to use all our strength to climb the wall and retrieve a food item. We then had to discuss why we may or may not use this food item in a survival situation. The next activity was shelter building. We had to use some tarpaulin and rope to create the safest den that would stop the rain from getting in. After that, we went onto raft building. We had to safely get a chicken, some corn and a fox from one side of the lake to the other and back again ( but we had to use our problem solving skills to make sure that the chicken didn’t eat the corn…and the fox didn’t eat the chicken!) The final activity was fire building. We collected lots of wood and once the fire was roaring, we cooked some bread. It was a fantastic day and in the end WE ALL SURVIVED!

Year 2 went on an adventure on the Wild Walk organised by Mrs Roberts. We had a wonderful time making bird boxes with Hazel from the Tidy Team and Bog Babies out of clay. We even made our own hotdogs on the fire pit. We loved exploring nature it was so much fun. Thank you to the friends and families who were able to attend, we had a great time and hope that you did too!

Wild Walk Stars

The F2 children had a fantastic time on the WIld Walk with their parents and grown-ups from home. They took part in a scavenger hunt and a minibeast hunt using the special pooters to suck up the bugs. They used the items they had found on their scavenger hunt to make a special picture to take home. They planted a sunflower seed to take home and watch it grow. They loved making dens and charcoal pictures and sharing the outdoors with their families. The children used lots of language to talk about what they were doing and loved sharing the experience with their families.

Mama Panya’s Pancakes

Year 2 had a lovely time on Wild Walk making our own Mama Panya`s Pancakes. We discussed how people in Africa might cook their food and the types of food they might eat. We also created our own instructions for making the pancakes and made our own mixture. Mrs Roberts then helped us cook the pancakes on our fire pit and we filled them with banana and chocolate spread, Yummy!

Year 2 Wild Walk ‘on Fire!’

We had an amazing time on the Wild Walk with Mrs Roberts. We learned all about fire safety and what to do to keep ourselves and others safe.  We then each took it in turns to toast a marshmallow. It was an amazing experience we shall never forget.

Minibeast Mayhem & Magic

Year 4 visited the Wetlands, at Old Moor RSPB, as part of our new science topic about food chains, lifecycles and habitats. We visited and worked in different habitats including; Wetlands, Grasslands and Woodlands. We started our day off with some pond dipping and used identification keys to see what we had found. We found water boatmen, blood worms, water beetles, water spiders and Damselfly nymphs. We created food chains and discussed life cycles. Did you know that a Damselfly nymph lives in the water for around 5 years, then climbs up long grass, splits itself open to reveal wings and then flies away to lay eggs? Amazing! After lunch, we went into the woodlands and collected mini beasts. We found lots of amazing creatures including centipedes and millipedes. The main difference between them is that a centipede is a carnivore and has 1 pair of legs for each section of the body and a millipede is a herbivore and has 2 pairs of legs for each section of the body. Finally we used classification keys to work out what we had found. Keep watching as we are going to be creating our very own classification key really soon. Staff at Old Moor commented on how well behaved and hardworking we all were, this made Mrs Walton extremely proud! A great day, well done everybody!

Orienteering in Year 3

Some amazing work this morning in PE by Year 3 who learnt how to read a compass and then make their very own compass on the ground using cones and chalk.  This was also marked out to perfection by the children to show the correct direction of north, south, east and west.  If you ask your child, they should be able to tell you how to find out the four different directions using a compass and which colour on the dial always points to north.

They visited Owd Martha’s Yard and completed a range of jobs to help the Tidy Team prepare for the first Community Event of the year! Even better still, we made the front page of the Barnsley Chronicle! A fantastic effort, well done everyone!
